Portable ultrasound device in Southern Sudan
Sudan—A handheld ultrasound system from Siemens Healthcare has been selected to perform obstetric scanning in the town of Yei in Southern Sudan, which has a population of approximately ten million people but only ten qualified midwives. It currently has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world. The ACUSON P10TM will help local staff at the clinic to identify any problems during pregnancy as soon as possible along with any other obstetric complications.

Endoscopic ultrasound may improve outcomes in pancreatic cancer
Oak Brook, IL—A study in GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has found that endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is associated with improved outcomes in patients with localized pancreatic cancer, possibly due to the earlier detection of cancers and improved stage-appropriate management. This is the first study to analyze a large population-based registry and demonstrate that EUS evaluation is associated with improved pancreatic cancer survival.

AIUM offers new Musculoskeletal Ultrasound accreditation program
Laurel, MD—AIUM offers ultrasound practice accreditation in dedicated musculoskeletal ultrasonography. In collaboration with multiple organizations, including the American College of Radiology (ACR), the AIUM previously released practice and training guidelines for the performance of musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations.

Change in Oregon licensure policies
Portland, OR—Effective July 1, 2010, the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging requires that any person who operates sonographic equipment be licensed by a credentialing organization in a medical imaging modality recognized by the Board.

China's ultrasound market set to skyrocket
England—Driven by China's ongoing healthcare reform, strong economic growth, and the Chinese population's increasing awareness of healthcare issues, the Chinese market for ultrasound imaging equipment is expected to exceed $1 billion by 2014, growing at a compounded average growth rate of 9.3%, a study by the English research company InMedica predicts.

ARDMS to develop Musculoskeletal (MSK) Sonography credentialing exam
