RT(S) RT(VS) RT(BS) ARRT awards the RT(S)—Registered Technologist (Sonography)—credential to those who pass the Sonography Exam through either the Primary or Postprimary Pathway. (Go to arrt.org for more information.) The ARRT Sonography exam tests your knowledge in (1) Sonographic Procedures, and (2) Patient Care and Physical Principles of Ultrasound. The total time for the exam is 7.5 hours including a 30-minute break between the two segments. The first segment, Sonographic Procedures, is 4 hours long, and the second segment is 2.5 hours long. There are 360 scored items and 40 pilot items for a total of 400 questions. The RT(VS) (Registered Technologist [Vascular Sonography]), and RT(BS) (Registered Technologist [Breast Sonography]) credentials are awarded to those who pass the respective exams through the Postprimary Pathway only. As a prerequisite for the RT(VS) and RT(BS) exams you must first earn a credential in Sonography—from ARRT or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). The ARRT Breast Sonography exam is 3.5 hours long and has 184 scored questions and 30 pilot items for a total of 215 questions.
