Physics Preparation

The ARDMS Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination tests basic physical principles and instrumentation knowledge. Passing this exam is a requirement for the RDMS, RDCS, and RVT credentials. Sonography professionals who seek an ARDMS credential are required to pass both the SPI examination and a corresponding specialty examination within five years. Once the SPI exam is passed, applicants may earn multiple credentials without having to repeat a physical principles and instrumentation exam.

Davies offers an SPI mock exam in book form, on CD, or by download—
Ultrasound Physics Review: SPI Edition, Ultrasound Physics CD-ROM Mock Exam: SPI Edition, and Ultrasound Physics Mock Exam: SPI Edition (Download). We also have textbooks for further study.

If you are looking for guidance and a clear understanding of the principles and facts you must know to pass the SPI exam, the Davies mock exam is the one for you.

"I have been doing ultrasound since 2004 but was afraid to take the SPI exam until my job forced me to in 2011. I purchased your CD-ROM and used it to study every day as the test got closer. I am happy to report that I passed with a score of 647 out of 700 on my first try! Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful product! I am purchasing all of my review materials from you in the future."—Erin Brooks, RDMS, RVT

"The explanations are excellent. The entire CD is well organized. I will certainly recommend this product. There is an ample amount of information with detailed explanations. Thank you for a great product."—Judy Leigh, RVT

"Ultrasound Physics Review contained a wider scope of questions than the other review book I had. I liked the format and the explanations. This book helped me pass the SPI exam. It covered things my other study book didn't and asked questions in a different manner. A great purchase! I would recommend it to anyone." —Petra Wilson, RT(R), RDMS, RVT

"Explanations given for each question helped immensely."—Curtis L. Baumann, RDCS, RVT

Seven Reasons To Choose Davies!

Davies has registry-prep, CME, and educational solutions that can propel your career skyward and help you reach your full potential, quickly, effectively, and inexpensively. Have questions? Need Advice? Talk to us! When you succeed, we succeed.

Many folks get the opportunity to take the Ultrasound Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) exam more than once. Mention physics to some sonographers and their expression tells you that you might as well have said "quantum mechanics" or "regression analysis." Perhaps this describes you. Certainly, fear of physics is common among registry candidates. So is taking the exam more than once.

For frustrated sonographers who want to put this test behind them, we join thousands of successful candidates and educators in recommending the Ultrasound Physics Mock Exam by Cindy Owen, RT, RVT, RDMS.

In it Cindy frequently refers to two of our favorite physics texts, Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation by Wayne Hedrick, David Hykes and Dale Starchman, and Diagnostic Ultrasound: Principles and Instruments by Frederick Kremkau. Any of them will help you tremendously, especially in combination with the Ultrasound Physics Mock Exam.

How do you know which one will be best for you? Match your learning style and interests with the style, features, and level of difficulty of the book.
